Characteristics
More demanding than it seems, the Xorret de Catí via ferrata is slightly overhanging in its first stretch and exposed in the upper part. Don't miss the Despeñador.
The via ferrata of Xorret del Catí is a route suitable for everyone, especially because it is very well equipped and the wall itself has multiple natural holds to progress. Its short duration also makes things easier because once we are on the ledge of the spur, the most exposed part, we have just 5 meters to finish the route.
However, it is not as easy as it seems at first glance because much of the route, especially in the first clamps, is slightly overhanging and despite not being very exposed, it achieves a certain verticality in the horizontal part that takes us to the right of the spur.
Definitely highly recommended as a complement to other via ferratas in the area including the Despeñador, great natural viewpoint of the region, which can be accessed by a PR trail from the end of the via ferrata.
Arrival
We leave Castalla by the Avenida de Petrer following the signs to Xorret de Catí. We will go up some steep ramps until we practically reach the foot of the Despeñador, where the road begins to descend. This climb is part of many mythical stage finishes of "la Vuelta" to Spain and the truth is that even the car finds it hard to climb. We go down the road and soon we will find a detour to the right to enter the refuge of Xorret de Catí. If it is open we can enter with the car but we must leave it here or on the hill and continue on foot to the refuge, about 4 minutes.
Approach
From the refuge and taking as a reference an old oven, we follow the track closed by a chain in the direction of the Mirador del Xorret de Catí. We will arrive at the crossroads with a wider track that goes up to the right, we follow it until the viewpoint. From there we only have to go up some steps until we reach a post that indicates the beginning of the via ferrata, a few meters below.
Descent
- 2 rappels of 25 meters installed in the same via ferrata.
- Descend through the short channel equipped behind the spur of the via ferrata to the PR and the approach path. Well indicated.
- As typical for the style in Spain/France the cable is only for security and should NOT be used for climbing, so of course also the difficulty level is based on that (different style like in the alps etc. where the cable has much more tension and counts as part of the ferrata)
