Characteristics

The Via ferrata Ceria Merlone is a controversial relic from the 1960s, when "artificial climbing" was particularly popular. Countless ladders (there were once more than 300 rungs) lead very exposed up the almost vertical rock of the jagged northwest flank of the Cima Cadin di Nord-Est. In order to reduce the falling rocks from the rubble field in the uppermost section of the climb, rubble barriers were built. The great view from the summit (Drei Zinnen, Cristallo, Sorapìs, Marmolada etc.) and the exposed via ferrata result in a perfect touring day in the Dolomites.

Arrival

From the north: via Lienz or Brixen to Toblach. Turn south there and take state road 51 to Schluderbach. Continue on the state road 48b until the entrance to Misurina. Drive on Drei-Zinnen-Strasse for about one kilometer to the parking lot of the Rifugio Fratelli Fonda Savio on the right side of the road (toll-free).

From the south: via Vittorio-Veneto to Cortina d'Ampezzo and further on Passo Tre Croci to the end of Misurina. Further see above.

Public transport: by train to Toblach and by bus to Lake Misurina.

Approach

Ascend from the car park on path 115 (first forest road, then hiking trail) to Rifugio Fratelli Fonda Savio (2367 m). Ascend from the hut on path 112 towards Cadin del Nevaio. On a back of rubble (at the signpost) to the left and through a depression (often old snow) to the entrance.

Exit

Same as approach.

Interesting facts

The low technical requirements are not reflecting the extreme exposure!
