Characteristics
A short via ferrata on a rock below the Riegersburg, which leads clockwise around the rock. The via ferrata begins at the end of the Leopold via ferrata route with a vertical descent (B/C - C), then a decisive 3m crossing (D) and again a vertical climb (C/D - C) up to the terrace of the Burgrrestaurant. Another option is to approach from the terrace of the Burgrrestaurant - see Topo.
Arrival
See the GPS of the small parking lot at the entrance to the castle. You can also park in the large parking lot on the north side of the castle, from which a cable car leads to the castle.
Boarding
From the parking lot, go to the ticket office, through the turnstiles into the castle courtyard and along the access path to the beginning of the Leopold via ferrata or continue to the terrace of the Burgrrestaurant. The best solution is probably to climb the Leopold, then tackle Heinrich, climb to the terrace of the Burgrrestaurant and from there complete the extension solo.
Exit
From the terrace of the castle restaurant, follow the access path past the children's playground and the vineyards to the entrance to the castle and on to the parking lot.
Interesting facts
The beautiful Riegersburg, which belongs to the Liechtenstein family, is located on the huge volcanic rock. From the summit there is a wonderful view of the surrounding area, the vineyards and the fertile fields.
The via ferrata is open from April 1st to October 31st, entry is possible 24/7. If you arrive outside box office opening hours, a ticket machine is available at the entrance. Entrance costs EUR 6.50, children pay EUR 3.50, family tickets cost EUR 15.50 (as of August 2022).
There are two other private via ferratas on the rock below the castle: Jungfernsteig (C) and Rittersteig (B/C), which are only accessible with a guide. Appointments must be arranged in advance - further information can be found at www.naturbursch.at.
