Hochkogelsteig - A/B
Predicting whether..
Characteristics
The Eisriesenwelt and the Hochkogelsteig are two exciting destinations that can be combined very well. The mountain railway makes it easier to climb to the largest ice cave in the world, which is a little adventure in itself. The Hochkogelsteig begins not far from the cave entrance and, away from the hustle and bustle around the Eisriesenwelt, you climb up to the plateau edge of the Tennengebirge. In addition to the deep view of the Salzach Valley, the panorama extends from the Hochkönig over the Watzmann to the ice giants of the Ankogel Group.
Arrival
Via the A10 to Werfen and there on the sign-posted access road to the Eisriesenwelt car park. Then in about 15 minutes on foot to the valley station and by train to the Ödl-Haus (alternative foot ascent plus approx. 1,5 hours).
Public transport: by train to Werfen and by bus to the Eisriesenwelt car park.
Approach
From the Ödl-Haus you climb towards the cave entrance. Shortly before the cave, the Hochkogelsteig branches off to the right after a gorge.
Exit
Like going down to the Dr.-Friedrich-Ödl-Haus.
Interesting facts
At the edge of the plateau you can reach a small hunting lodge in the so-called Hochkogeltief. From there you climb north on a climb to the summit of the Hochkogel (190 m ascent / 30 min.). The path has few exposed areas, so surefootedness is required! If you go to the Edelweißhütte via the Leopold-Happisch-Haus and the Streitmandlscharte, you can descend to the Werfener Hütte via the so-called throne ladder between Fieberhorn and Hochthron. From there down to the Gasthof Mahdegg and back to the parking lot of the Eisriesenwelt. This results in a gigantic and scenic plateau tour (a conditional challenge without overnight stay in a hut).
Time indication including cable car use.
