Characteristics
Inspired by the Calmont Klettersteig on the Moselle, Friedrich Herkert, chairman of the Klingenberg Winegrowing Association, had the idea of building a rock trail through the "Felsenröder" area between Klingenberg and Erlenbach. The Churfrankensteig is classified as easy as far as it is located on the old terrace of the "Unterer Röderspfad", although here too surefootedness and a head for heights are required. The Churfrankensteig is a 2.5-kilometer-long via ferrata that connects the two wine villages of Klingenberg and Erlenbach in the Miltenberg district. It was built in 2003 by Friedrich Herkert, the chairman of the Klingenberg Winegrowing Association.
The route runs through the "Felsenröder" area and leads over rock bays, via ferrata sections and staircases. The first part of the trail is relatively easy, while the second part requires surefootedness and a head for heights.
Arrival
To get to the Churfrankensteig, take the A3 to the Stockstadt exit. From there, continue on B 469 south to Obernburg and over the Main Bridge to Erlenbach. Shortly before the town exit towards Klingenberg, turn left to the parking lot at the Bergschwimmbad.
Approach
Descent
After the last via ferrata section, the route leads back to the middle level. From there, you can either return to the starting point or take the Weinbergsteig to Klingenberg.
