Characteristics
The Caprioli via ferrata is suitable for hikers with a good level of experience. The route has a medium difficulty, with the final challenging sections requiring strength and technique. The total difference in altitude uphill, up to the Rifugio San Marco, is about 690 meters. The average time to complete the entire circular route is 4 – 5 hours, depending on the individual pace. The via ferrata Caprioli offers spectacular views of the Dolomites, and among all of them stands out the continuous presence of the enormous silhouette of Mount Antelao, the second highest peak in the Dolomites. There are numerous panoramic points that will leave you breathless, and the view of the village of San Vito below is truly wonderful.
The first part of the trail is relatively easy, but in case of recent rains the presence of numerous grassy clods and dirt can make the ground slippery.
The upper part of the Caprioli via ferrata develops on solid rock, with smooth slabs where however some metal brackets, fixed in the most difficult points, are of great help. Although classified as medium difficulty, it is not a via ferrata to be taken lightly.
Arrival
To reach the starting point, from San Vito di Cadore you have to drive up to the Baita Sun Bar, where you park.
Approach
From here, following the clear signs, walk along the dirt road, path no. 228. After a few minutes you cross the Ru Seco stream and continue for about twenty minutes along the dirt road, until you reach a fork .Here you have to leave the dirt road and take a woodland road on the left that climbs very steeply into the beautiful pine and fir forest. The path to the Caprioli via ferrata is marked by a nice logo depicting two opposing roe deer heads.
The steep slope is really steep, as it climbs straight up without respite for quite a while, until it emerges onto a more open space, where the trail becomes less evident. However, thanks to the numerous signs, if you pay attention it is not difficult to find the way to follow. Since it is a new via ferrata, surely with the passing of time the trampling of hikers will mark the path more clearly. The path takes us close to the first rocks, descends to the left and then climbs again and finally takes us to the start of the Caprioli via ferrata, at an altitude of 1470 m
Descent
The via ferrata ends on a beautiful and panoramic green meadow, the Pra de Mason , at an altitude of 1750 m. Following path no. 225 in about twenty minutes you arrive at the San Marco refuge, a real gem located on the Col de chi de Os . From the San Marco refuge, path no. 228, passing by the Scotter refuge, takes you back to the Baita Sun Bar in about an hour, thus completing our circular route.
