Characteristics
The water from the glaciers of the Stubai Alps plunges through the impressive Auer gorge in front of the valley floor. There are two short via ferratas down into the gorge bottom. The crags serve the canyoning goers as rescue, ascent and descent into the gorge and are basically only interesting in connection with a guided canyoning tour (various providers in Ötz). If you are in the area, you can venture into the Klammgrund if necessary - secured with a via ferrata set. It is not uncommon to find “frog men” wading through the gorge. If you are lucky, you will find an extended climbing facility - the plans for the climb at Big waterfall are already running.
Arrival
On the A12 to the Ötztal exit and on to Ötz. In the village you branch off towards Kühtai and follow the road to Taxegg. Park where possible (only a few parking spaces).
Public transport: by train to Ötztal-Bahnhof and then by bus to Ambach, from there a hiking trail leads to the wooden bridge.
Approach
Right at the sign (Taxegg), a path leads down to the left to the Auer gorge. Follow this up to a wooden bridge. Var. A - Big waterfall: over the bridge until you see the hut on a meadow with a beehive. Behind the lower end of the meadow is a lookout point (fence, benches), shortly afterwards the climb begins. Var. B. - Gorge: directly in front of the bridge - on the right of the chapel and the meadow - on the left of the bridge into the forest and on clear signs of climbing at the beginning of ferrata.
Exit
Same as approach.
Interesting facts
The descent into the gorge should only be done when there is no precipitation (the water rises quickly when it rains!). Who at Var. B does not find the signs of climbing, should reverse (acute risk of falling on the edge of the gorge!). The via ferrata is suitable for children aged 9 and over.
