Characteristics

The Via Ferrata del Procinto also allows tourists to get to the top of the impressive and extraordinary Monte Procinto, surrounded by steep walls and jutting out of the forest, making it look like you are somewhere in Thailand or China. However, the excitement of the view of the mountain wanes when you step onto the via ferrata. Although the mountain may seem insurmountable, the via ferrata is very easy and in some places there are even stairs carved into the rock. It is quite disappointing that such an extraordinary mountain is climbed by such an unspectacular via ferrata. This could have been a great sport climbing route, but it appears to have been done so that any keen via ferrata climber could tackle it.

DANGER:

The maps also show a via ferrata called Variant ferrata Cintura del Procinto, which leads to the saddle between the small and large Procinto. It is not a via ferrata, there is no rope, just a single crampon, and the rest is climbing in the rocks of the forest with a difficulty level of around UIAA II-. Anyone who wants to go there shouldn't be surprised. The orientation is northwest below Monte Procinto.

Arrival

For the easiest access, we recommend the parking lot at the Alto Mattana restaurant at an altitude of 1030 m above sea level. Unfortunately, this comes at the expense of a short journey along winding roads and a road that is not in very good condition.

An alternative is the car park at the end of the village of Stazzema at 500 m above sea level, where access by car is easy.

Boarding

From the Alto Mattana car park, climb to the Callare di Matanna pass and then descend to the view of Monte Procinto. Here you have to find a narrow path that runs directly under the rocks of Monte Nona and get to the bridge over the Roklinke Foce del Procinto. After the bridge, turn left and then right where you will see the entry rope. The via ferrata begins with a ladder.

Exit

Same as the ascent, including the descent via the via ferrata. Alternatively, you can choose a circular tour after the descent, e.g. B. via the Foce delle Porchette saddle.

Interesting facts

The view of the mountain you will climb is impressive. After climbing through the via ferrata, a cave awaits you at the top. The descent takes place again via the via ferrata. In addition to the large Procinto, there is also the small and mini Monte Procinto.
