Characteristics
The approx. 500 m long Speikboden via ferrata, opened in June 2018 through the northeast flank of the Speikboden, is an ideal beginner via ferrata. Crisp steep walls alternate with easy passages. If you are still overwhelmed after the first wall, you can take an emergency exit. The short access thanks to the cable car and the easy "descent" with the chairlift enable quick access. The flip side of the coin is the look of a summer ski area. At the latest when you enjoy the view of the Zillertal Alps and the Venediger Group from the summit, this disadvantage is quickly forgotten.
Arrival
On the SS49 to Bruneck and further on the SS621 into the Tauferer Ahrntal. 2 km after Sand in Taufers is the valley station of the Speikboden cable car in the district of Drittelsand. Take the cable car to the mountain station.
By public transport: take the train to Bruneck Nord and the bus (line 450) to the Kabinenbahn Speikboden stop.
Approach
From the mountain station, follow the signs mostly off the ski slopes to the entrance. Anyone who ascends from the valley on foot outside of the operating hours must expect an additional 1000 meters of altitude (2,5 hours).
Exit
From the exit, follow the path towards the Speikboden summit cross, which is already secured. After about 5 minutes you will meet the hiking trail. On this, either ascend to the right shortly to the summit of the Speikboden or descend to the left to the mountain station of the Sonnklar chairlift. Take the chairlift to the Michlreis Alm and descend to the top station of the Speikboden cable car in a few minutes.
A nice round results if you descend from the Speikboden via the Seewassernock (2433 m) and the Kleine Nock (2227 m) to the mountain station of the Speikboden cable car.
Interesting facts
The via ferrata can be combined with the scenic Kellerbauer Höhenweg to a very long day's activity. From Weißenbach you can take the regular bus back to the valley station of the Speikboden cable car.
Despite the minor difficulties, the via ferrata is only suitable for children to a limited extent due to the large step distances.
