Characteristics
Seewand is, mainly due to its length and exposure, one of the most difficult Austrian ferratas. The most difficult parts are at the end, when one can be quite exhausted. The ferrata offers stunning views of the town of Hallstatt and the surrounding countryside. If you are lucky you could see paragliders flying around :) Around the middle of the ferrata, there is a place under the rocks where it is suitable for rest, snack, etc. The exit from the ferrat is relatively difficult and long. From the peak of Seewand, it is possible to continue to the Dachstein.
Arrival
Drive to the charming town of Hallstatt, then to Obertraun. Next to the lake on the left you will find a parking lot.
Approach
Cross the road and follow red signs and pointers to the ferrata (not well visible). At the beginning there should be a board with a description of the ferrata.
Exit
From the top of the ferrata, it is about an hour along the red-blue road to the Gjaidalm cottage. From the cottage follow hiking signs to Obertraun down the slope (an unpleasant stony path), or you can use the cable car. Then along the road, it is about 2 km back, to the parking lot.
Interesting facts
- one of the longest ferratas
- difficult approach and exit
- it isn't possible to refill water on the ferrata so bring enough with you!
