Characteristics

At the summit of the striking limestone above the market town of Griffen, the Bamberg prince-bishops built a castle in the 12th century. From the end of the 18th century, this castle fell into ruin, which still exists today.

In addition to the popular hiking trail, since May 2018 there is also an extremely demanding sport ferrata to ruins. Carinthia's most difficult climbing route at the time of construction and the heaviest E-slope in the Eastern Alps use the approximately 200 m wide southwest face of the Schlossberg so skillfully that 450 challenging climbing meters have to be mastered despite small difference in altitude.

In particular, the middle part of the mostly crossing via ferrata is often overhanging and therefore very power consuming. There are hardly any light sections and hardly any natural resting possibilities. A short fixation for rest and via ferrata gloves are essential. Note: Due to the ongoing difficulties, the via ferrata is often underestimated compared to other via ferrata with similar maximum difficulty.

Arrival

On the A2 to the exit Griffen and to the roundabout in the center. Take the first exit onto Packerstraße, after 300 m turn left and follow the signs to the parking lot of the castle ruin. By public transport: By train to Klagenfurt, Wolfsberg or Völkermarkt-Kühnsdorf. Continue by bus to Griffen (bus stop Roundabout or East).

Approach

From the parking lot, follow the wide hiking trail in the direction of Schlossberg. Then turn right onto steps on a path and in a few minutes to get started.

Exit

From the exit on the well-trodden path along the ruin wall ascend to a transition. Climb over the wall and on the trail to the valley.

Interesting facts

On the summit, the tired climber can strengthen himself in the Schlossberg-Schänke and enjoy the magnificent view of the valley as well as the Karawanken and Kamnik-Savinja Alps.
