Characteristics

Named after the discoverer, the Bozener mountaineer Johann Santner, this trail is a classic in the Dolomites, but only in the top section is a typical, completely secured via ferrata. Most of the time you move unsecured on natural belts and over some smaller boulders along the impressive west crashes of the Rosengartenspitze. These very alpine passages require both sure-footedness and mountain experience. The return route also offers further highlights with the famous Vajolet Towers, the view into the Vajolettal on the east side and the rock face of the Tschager-Joch.

Arrival

On the A22 to the exit Bolzano Nord, on the SS241 to the Karerpass and on the pass height left direction Nigerpass to the Frommeralm (chair lift valley station).

Approach

The trail starts just behind the hut (top station Laurin II chairlift).

Descent

On the way no. 542S, down to the Gartlhütte, 2621 m, directly under the well-known Vajolettürmen. The route continues, partly secured, through a valley basin down to the Preuß- and Vajolethütte, 2243m. From there, take a short stretch of road 546 in the direction of Gardeccia and turn right on the path 541 towards Chagjoch, where the road 550 branches off to the east at 2410 m and leads steeply to the Tschagerjoch, 2630m, then steeply down to the Rosengartenhütte.

Points of interest

The backdrop of the upper section with the more than one hundred meters of towering rock teeth and the imposing ice gutter is without a doubt one of the most impressive Dolomite landscapes.
