Characteristics

A wonderful sports via ferrata in Avanturistički park Peć Mlini on a majestic vertical wall directly above the source of the river Tihaljine. The via ferrata can be divided into 3 sections. The first (longest) starts immediately with a sharp vertical ascent up the cramms, followed by an ascent up long ladders (watch out for sharp edges, according to the dried blood there have already been many scratches here), sometimes in a slight overhang. There are about 2 more difficult D/E spots in this section, but only for 1-2 steps. This is followed by a relatively wide and long ledge, suitable for resting and refreshments. If you are at the end of your strength here, you better turn back, at this point you have covered less than half of the route. The second passage contains 2 fairly difficult but short E overhangs and again quite a bit of climbing mostly in C/D – D difficulty. This is followed by a shorter ledge and then the last (shortest section) but mostly in D difficulty. Just before the end comes the final challenge, from a small ledge, you need to climb 1-2 steps over the more difficult overhang E. The E/F classification is probably a bit overrated, but the entire via ferrata is very demanding due to its length and high average difficulty. The via ferrata was put into operation in 2019, it is well secured and perfectly maintained. There are plenty of scrambling on the route, the rock itself is very rugged and provides plenty of natural steps. Definitely don't forget the descender! The best information at the end – the rock is in the shade all day…but you will still sweat a lot!

Arrival

Just follow the signs for Avanturistički park Peć Mlini. The road is already well-marked from the Gorica border crossing. It is appr. 55 km and 85 minutes away from Makarska.

Approach

From the parking lot along wooden footbridges and stone paths to the start of the via ferrata. There are signposts along the way. The entrance is behind the ruins of an old mill at the source of the river Tihaljine.

Exit

From the via ferrata, go right towards the zip-line intermediate station and then continue along the gravel road, after about 500 m turn right onto the asphalt road, after which after about 900 m you will reach the main road, on which there are already signs for Avanturistički park Peć Mlini. On the left you will pass "Ravlića pećine" cave - be sure to stop here - it is beautiful! It is about 1 km from the cave to the parking lot. The total descent is 3.3 km.

Interesting facts

The most demanding via ferrata in this area and the only sporting one far and wide. In operation since 2019. Open every day from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. In winter from 1.10. until 31.3. operation unknown. (contact email: pecmliniap@gmail.com or phone: +387 63 188 474; +387 63 986 419).

At the entrance to the via ferrata, there is a loose sign saying that the via ferrata is only open on the weekend with a phone number for a professional climbing agency, but the administrator at the entrance did not object to a question about solo climbing on weekdays. There is no such information on the official boards at the entrance to the park! On the contrary, there is information that you climb at your own risk, mandatory via ferrata equipment, etc... like anywhere else. The administrator only pointed out that about 50% of climbers return from half the via ferrata.

Free entry (August 2022).

There are also 5 classic climbing routes in the park.

There are many paths, benches, streams, small lakes and small waterfalls in the park, plenty of shade even on steamy days. Suitable for family trips or for pleasant spending time of non-climbers. A restaurant is being built next to the parking lot (August 2022 - just before completion).
