Characteristics

The Póvoa de Lanhoso Via Ferrata is officially graded K2, although in practice it feels very easy, closer to a K1 level. It is a short, mostly vertical route, ideal for beginners or for a quick outing without significant technical or physical demands.

As a particular feature, there are several equipped deviations with a safety cable leading դեպի horizontal side sections. Note: these do not belong to the main ferrata route, but instead provide access to anchor points used for rappelling or other purposes.

At the top, upon finishing the route and to the left, there is an initial installation next to the wall that may be interpreted as an alternative descent option, consisting of either a single rappel of 60 m or two rappels of around 30 m each, according to information published by the promoting entity.

However, the overall equipment of the ferrata presents several aspects that could be improved. The steel cable, with a relatively small diameter (approx. 6–8 mm), may be insufficient for this type of installation. Additionally, older anchors are present, and in some sections there are visible signs of wear on the cable itself, including areas with clear damage (especially in the अंतिम or penultimate section).

There is also an unusual configuration in how the sections are divided: the lifeline runs continuously through anchor points without proper independent fixing systems (such as cable clamps), which could compromise system behavior in the event of a fall.

Furthermore, there is no informational signage at the start of the route (no panel with technical data, grade, timing, or responsible entity), despite it apparently being a private installation.

⚠️ Caution is advised in its current condition. A technical inspection and maintenance would be recommended to ensure optimal safety conditions.

Arrival

The route begins almost directly from the path, with a somewhat discreet start partially hidden behind rocks, next to the access road leading to the chapel and the castle. Parking is possible very close by, reducing the approach to 1–2 minutes.

Approach

The route follows a rock wall equipped with metal staples and a continuous safety cable, with no complex moves or particularly exposed sections. The progression is straightforward and obvious, allowing smooth climbing throughout.

There are no notable difficulties along the route, making it suitable for people with little or no prior via ferrata experience. The ascent time is very short and can be completed in just a few minutes.

Descent

The return is made easily via the road descending from the castle area and the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora do Pilar, taking approximately 5 to 7 minutes.
