Characteristics
It is a wine tour of approx. 3 km in length through the steepest vineyard in Europe high above the narrowest and most beautiful "bend" of the Moselle near Bremm, partly secured by ladders, steel ropes, kramls and pegs. The Via Ferrata is bi-directional, you can start from either Eller or Bremm, however it is recommended to go out from Bremm. From the via ferrata there are wonderful views of the meander of the Moselle, the ubiquitous vineyards and the ruins of the Stuben monastery on the other side of the river.
Arrival
See GPS coordinates, parking at the local cemetery with a church.
Onset
Continue along the driveway for approx. 250m.
Descent
From the end of the via ferrata, descend down to the river and follow the path along the river to the parking lot. Another way is to go back via via ferrata, and the third option is to head off and climb to the top of Calmont to the summit cross and follow the ridge counter-clockwise to return to Bremm and then to the parking lot - but this journey will take you about 2 hours.
Interesting facts
Bremmer Calmont is located between Bremm and Edingereller, at the beginning of the "Cochemer Krampen", an extremely winding and attractive section of the Moselle.
The via ferrata was built in 2001 at the suggestion of the municipalities of Bremm, Ediger-Eller and Neef with the active help of citizens, winemakers and sections of the Alpenverein Koblenz, as a secure route over the Moselle in alpine style.
There are many excellent local wineries with tasting options throughout the area. Vineyards were established here already 2,000 years ago by the Romans, who recognized the advantages of slate soil on steep slopes facing the sun and planted the first vines in Bremmer Calmont. They called the hill calidus mons - hot hill - because it is a south-facing slope with extremely favorable climatic conditions. The slopes with an inclination between 50 and 55° are among the steepest vineyard terraces in Europe. The most distinctive Riesling wines are grown here, which achieve high awards.
The best time to visit is autumn.
In the spring of 2024, the via ferrata was temporarily closed for repairs.
