Characteristics

The mighty Fallbachwand with the waterfall of the same name has always been a top alpine destination for ice climbers. In spring 2018, a long, medium-difficulty via ferrata was built on the wall to the right of the waterfall. If the vertical, completely free-standing ice column is a bad challenge for ice climbers, the via ferrata has no technical difficulties - but the sum of the many C/D and C passages is the challenge! Even well-trained via ferrata climbers often raise their heads from the middle section at the latest, look at the never-ending rock wall and look for the end of the via ferrata. Conclusion: Not for beginners - for ferratists with a little endurance in the forearms but an absolute must!

Arrival

On the Arlberg expressway to the Dalaas exit. Shortly drive back on the federal road L97 in the direction of Bludenz, after about 1,5 km you will reach the new via ferrata parking lot directly on the road.

Public transport: by train to Bludenz or Langen am Arlberg and by bus (line 90) to Dalaas Gasthof Krone (from there on foot to via ferrata).

Approach

From the car park on the L97 (Arlbergstrasse), briefly follow the road towards Bludenz, then climb left on the hiking trail to Fallbachfall. Finally, follow the path up to the brown rock face with the waterfall. Briefly uphill on the western side of the waterfall in the rubble and descend to the visible entrance.

Exit

From the end of via ferrata, follow the blue dot marking, cross the stream and reach the hiking path on the blue marked path. On this to the left (blue / white marking), where you come back to the last houses on the asphalt road in Winkel. From there, turn left on the gravel path towards Fallbachfall. At the junction to the Fallbach waterfall, descend to the right on the familiar approach path to the parking lot.

Interesting facts

Very long and demanding via ferrata, which definitely requires some stamina. With over 500 meters of altitude, this is definitely a demanding company that should NOT be underestimated - there is NO emergency exit! In the wet, the via ferrata is not recommended due to the many smooth rock passages. Rockfall must be observed above the lower steep step by climbing ahead!

The via ferrata runs right next to the waterfall - if there is still snow and ice on the wall, do NOT take the via ferrata. The extent to which the safety devices have to be replaced every year will become clear (avalanches and stones often rush over this wall in winter).
