Characteristics
The beginning of the via ferrata is relatively easy, then about 1 hour of climbing through an open chimney of difficulty B/C, or along the inclined plates (B). This is followed by a crossing of grassy terrain (A/B). Then rock sections along the ridge and around the rock tower (B/C - C), where there is a self-service barrel with drinks (the price is 6 CHF and is paid at the Wiwannihütte). The final section is again a crossing of grassy terrain (A). The via ferrata is very well secured, even the transitions between individual climbing sections. But the ropes are frayed in several places - watch out for injuries! From the via ferrata there are sweeping views of the opposite green massif with several waterfalls as well as the nearby 4,000 m Valais Alps.
Arrival
The starting point is the town of Ausserberg. The parking is only for 3 cars and for a maximum of 5 hours, otherwise it is possible to park in the large parking lot in the center of the village (parking fee during the day 0.80 CHF/hour, at night 0.20 CHF/hour, all day 12 CHF/day) .
Approach
From the parking walk for approx. 45 minutes on the asphalt road to the Choruderri crossroads 1259 m. Here, turn right on the red direction Ze Steinu, there is also a sign for Klettersteig Baltschiedertal, past the historic Niwärch aqueduct. Be careful, this beautiful narrow path is quite dangerous with steep slopes, it is very slippery when wet! (The trail can be bypassed, turn right at the end of the Ausserberg, there is a more than 1 km long tunnel on the way, you must have a headlamp.) After approx. 40 min. you will reach a cottage with a barn at the crossroads Ze Steinu 1305 m (GPS 46.341280N, 7.879368E), here continue on the red road. After about 20 min. you can't miss the intersection of the red and blue trails with the sign "Klettersteig Baltschidertal Wiwanni Vie Ferrate" 1410 m (GPS 46.348037N, 7.879181E). Here turn left onto the blue road and climb sharply up the hill to the rock massif to the via ferrata 1780 m, approx. 50 min.
Exit
From the end of the via ferrata, head towards the picturesque Wiwannihütte 2470 m (approx. 10 min.) and then continue along the red trail to the village of Ausserberg.
