Characteristics

The quickest way to reach the summit of the Hochtausing is via the often earthy and therefore slippery Hochtausing east climb. From the summit you can admire a wonderful mountain panorama. The descent is usually via the Tonisteig, because you have a little overshoot in your pocket.

Arrival

Via the A9 to the Selzthal junction and continue on the B146 to Wörschach. Turn right immediately below the ruins of Wolkenstein (signpost Wörschachberg and Hochmölbinghütte) and up the Wörschachberg on a narrow road. Possibility to drive to the Schönmoos car park (last piece of gravel road).

By public transport: by train to Wörschach Schwefelbad, through Wörschach and on the street mentioned to the starting point (possibly by taxi).

Approach

Ascent east (1 hour): Ascend path 281 to Paffensteinwiese. Turn left on path 282 towards Hochtausing until the entrance.

Ascent to Tonisteig (2 hours): Ascend path 281 via the Lampoltenalm to the Lampoltner Sattel. Left on path 278 up to the Schnehitzalm and again left slightly descending on a mule track towards Hochtausing.

Exit

Via the east rise (A/B, 1+; 2 hours): from the exit via a Latschensteig in short to the summit. Continue over the east rise (A/B, 1+, dangerous when wet) to the ascent path and back to the starting point.

Via Tonisteig (B/C, 1-; 2,5 hours): down a Latschengasse, past the Steigbuch, at the beginning of securing. Descending (A/B) one encounters a short ladder that leads into a steeper trough with a ladder sequence (B/C). You descend this to a kind of saddle. An intersection-like gutter (A/B) leads to the long crossing (A), which leads to the actual climbing end in a saddle. You climb down on the north-west side along trails. After a somewhat bad slope (A/B and 1-), the insurance ends. Follow the path down to the Schneehitzalm and then right to the Langpoltner Klamml. Keeping to the right, you climb over the Langpoltenalm - at the end on the exit path - down to Schönmoos.
