Characteristics

One of the few Via Ferratas which is almost entirely inside a cave. Hard hike to access it, but totally worth it, especially in hot days when the fresh air in the cave will be very welcome.

Via Ferrata inside a cave. The trail was built in 2002. It is very diversified, with metal steps as well as wood bridges and stairs. Very nice view from the window in the middle of the Ferrata.

Arrival

Go to Silene (Canton Uri) by train, bus or car. If you go by car, you can park your car in Silenen.

Then, take the cable car to Chilcherberge. It should be around 6CHF per person for a 2 way travel (2023). The cable car is more like an elevator, as it operates without a defined schedule (you have a phone there where you can call the operator and ask him to make it work when needed).

Approach

From the mountain cable car station, follow the path upwards in direction Seewi. If you find a small wood hut/refuge with lots of written stones, smile! You're going the right way! Some minutes (10-15min) after you pass this hut, you will see a blue sign to the left indicating the directions of the Ferrata (Hexensteig).

Walk along the rock face until, in the third ridge, you see a metal door. You're ready to begin!

Descent

At the end of the Ferrata, just take the trail down. You will pass the entrance of the Ferrata and do the same trail you used to come up the mountain.
