Characteristics
Via Ferrata located on the north side of the cliff below Monteleone Rocca Doria. This rock formation is famous for its panoramas and many climbing trails on its western side. Only half of the 600m length is equipped with steel ropes, because the rest is easy to pass, yet it takes up to 3h.
Ferrata della Regina has a starting point on the overhang of a rock that is secure, but you still need strong hands to keep on a ladder above the steel net. There are several escape routes and along the whole ferrata is an excellent telephone signal. In some parts, vegetation can be very annoying, but at the top the ferrata offers views of the lake and its surroundings, and the pretty panoramas that are worth all the sweat and exhaustion. In addition, it also has a rope bridge, probably the only one in Sardinia.
Arrival
From Alghero you get SS 292 to Villanova Monteleone. Follow the resort along the same path around the lake to the junction of Monteleone Rocciadoria. Walk through the center along the main road and follow the narrow, slightly sloping road at the end of the village, past the Geimeindehaus to the small church where you can park. Not far from the church there is a sign with information about the ferrata.
Approach
From a small church a few hundred meters along a gravel road and then turn left onto a marked path. It takes about quarter of an hour. The start of the ferrata is behind the climbing rocks.
Exit
After downing the last rock stair you will find a route that will take you to the start of the ferrata (less than 100m). Often lined with wooden railings.
Interesting facts
- probably the only rope bridge in Sardinia.
- in the village you can visit a bakery.
Orientation
- North. In winter the ferrata is in the shade, in spring and summer, the shadow is only in the early morning hours.
ATTENTION! ! !
During the summer season of 2017, work continued on securing the former quarries that surround the access road, so you must temporarily proceed with the following steps:
Take the scenic road back from the former car park and follow it about 750 meters, then park on the side of the road. On the right hand side, one of the escape routes should end. First, two falling metal staircases and the top of the climbing ledge. From there continue to the right until you meet the pipe staircase for the first time and so on until you close the road towards the car on both sides of the stairs.
