Characteristics
A great climbing park near Blechhammer in the former quarry on Blocksberg is located in the middle of the Thuringian Forest, approx. 5 km east of Steinach and approx. 5 km north of Sonneberg. There are several via ferrata routes in an arch from right to left with several entrances in the middle. Compared to other via ferratas in the area, this one is very long and some passages are quite demanding. There is also a Tibetan-style summit cross with prayer flags and a summit book.
The most logical is to start on the right, where the via ferrata starts with a vertical ascent C – B, followed by a traverse that gets harder and harder with each meter - here is an honest D. Next is a rope bridge, an easier ascent, optional 2 easy traverses (the highest point of the via ferrata) and a little more difficult descent C/D to cross. From the cross, descend B/C to the Nepalese bridge, before which it is possible to leave the via ferrata up to the right, or continue across the bridge and further via the traverse to the end/beginning of the via ferrata on the far left of the area with the most difficult places C. According to the topo, 3 possible descents are shown, in fact but there are 4.
Another option is the route second from the right, which starts by climbing the steel steps without a belay rope and you connect to the first route right after the rope bridge. The third route starts in the middle of the area and leads directly to the summit cross, the beginning is more of a C/D overhang, then a C perpendicular ascent followed by the most difficult part of the entire via ferrata – traverse D with a considerable overhang that stretches your arms nicely.
The fourth path in the corner of the rock slightly to the left below the cross is marked D according to the topo, but it is more like max. C/D.
In the left part, there are about 3-4 ascents for beginners or less skilled climbers, but it is not completely comfortable.
Arrival
See GPS coordinates, forest parking lot at the end of the asphalt road on the left. Alternatively, it is also possible to board from Judenbach (see map).
Approach
Continue from the parking lot further up the gravel road to the switchback for approx. 1.2 km. The entrance to the Blocksberg climbing area is directly from the road on the left.
Descent
The via ferrata has only one summit ascent, slightly to the left of the summit cross. Follow the well-trodden footpath to the left counter-clockwise along the edge of the quarry to the entrance. Then take the same access route back to the parking lot.
Points of interest
There are also countless classic climbing routes in the climbing park that you can try. Below the wall are several picnic areas with grills and benches. There are many hiking and cycling trails in the area. In wet weather, via ferrata is definitely not recommended because of the partially moss-covered rocks. The climbing garden is run by the Sonneberg DAV section.
