Description

Update information

Characteristics

A scenic delight, with a vertical middle section and a picturesque mountain chapel to snap out at the end - this is how you can summarize the St. Magdalena via ferrata in one sentence. In the entry area of this ferrata, the Tyrol Mountain Rescue Service implemented a so-called Alpine Safety Area, where you can try out the various via ferrata difficulties (A-E) and a red and black mountain path. Then you climb from the so-called Habichtblick - an original lookout point - over numerous rock steps up to the Chapel of St. Magdalena. Overall, a really well implemented via ferrata system that fits perfectly into the rugged mountain landscape of the Gschnitztal.

Arrival

Drive on the Brenner motorway to the Matrei exit. Continue on the main road towards Brenner to Steinach. At the beginning of the town, branch off to the right into the Gschnitztal, shortly before the town of Gschnitz turn left to St. Magdalena (signposted, parking lot at the bridge).

Public transport: by train to Steinach am Brenner and by bus to the Gschnitztal.

Approach

Follow the hiking path in the direction of St. Magdalena, after a wooden gate you branch off left to the via ferrata a few meters away. To the A entrance and the "Black Mountain Trail", follow the path below the wall to the left.

Exit

From the exit at the chapel (snack station) to the right and on the hiking trail back down into the valley - you will pass the entrance again. Continue on the familiar approach path to the parking lot.

Interesting facts

Attention: The "Black Mountain Trail" is basically an A via ferrata and overcomes some exposed passages in a steep crash area. Inexperienced people and people without a good alpine hiking experience should - if they don't feel 100% safe for the first few meters - definitely turn back!
