Arrival

From Děčín via Hřensko (road 62 directly on the banks of the Elbe behind the German border) or from Dresden (A17) via Pirna, Bad Schandau and Postelwitz to Schmilka (directly on the banks of the Elbe before the Czech border, 27 km from Pirna). In Schmilka there is a paid parking lot in the city center (4€ all day - as of 2023). It is also possible to park for free along the road at the German border crossing or to park in a parking space between the borders on the left side on the banks of the Elbe on the way to the German crossing.

Boarding

From the parking lot in Schmilka (at Café Richter, narrow street) the only path leads uphill (from the parking lot to the left, from the border to the right). The paved path ends at a turning point and a hiking trail continues to the intersection at the Zwieselhütte (yellow marking; 40 minutes in total). Keep left and after about 5 minutes you will reach the intersection at Heiligen Steige. From there you go uphill on the Heiligen Stiege (180 m ascent, 35 min). Then stay at the top right. After a few minutes turn left into “Wilden Hölle”. The paths there are often not marked. After about 200 m, turn left again. A few meters further there is a turnoff to the left to the Carolafelsen view. Continue straight ahead and after about 300 m you will reach an intersection with the Affenstein-Promenadeweg. Walk straight down to Wilde Hölle (approx. 15 minutes).

The path through the Wilde Hölle (a kind of gorge) is pretty inconspicuous. You cross an inclined rock face using handholds and ladders (B) and then descend via a short ladder (A/B) and rock stairs (A/B). The rest consists of hiking trails up to the intersection at the lower Affenstein promenade path. The Germans rate the whole thing as B.

Exit

As a return route, I recommend the Zwillingsstiege (B) or Häntzschelstiege (B/C) to the east (approx. 30 minutes). From the end point via the Holy Staircase (A) back to the parking lot (approx. 2 hours).
