Characteristics

The Falkenstein via ferrata is located in the Mürzer Oberland Nature Park in Upper Styria. It is divided into two main sections - the easier Falkenstein via ferrata, rated C/D (with an easier starting option A/B), and the more challenging Helis-Ppfier entry, rated D/E. The most difficult section D/E is almost right at the beginning of the via ferrata, but the other sections D and C/D are also more strenuous. The brackets in the more difficult sections are far apart, so smaller people will certainly have more trouble. There is an "emergency exit" about three-quarters of the way through, but if you make it this far you won't have any problems with the last few meters. From the end of the via ferrata it is only a few meters to the summit of the Falkenstein hill (960 m above sea level).

Arrival

Take the S6 to Mürzzuschlag, continue your journey to Neuberg an der Mürz and from there to Krampen. Below Falkenstein you come to a group of houses in Krampen. As soon as you arrive, there are signs along the street indicating parking spaces. There is also a large free parking lot in Krampen, about 15 minutes from the start of the via ferrata, easily accessible via the bike path. Under no circumstances should you park along the bike path!

Boarding

From the first information board of the via ferrata, near a picnic table, to the start of the via ferrata it is about 10-15 minutes slightly uphill.

Exit

From the end of the via ferrata, i.e. the last safety rope, you go towards the summit of the Falkenstein hill and from there westwards onto a forest path. Below a rock you descend along a steeper forest path that leads you back to the starting point of the via ferrata.

Interesting facts

There is a waterfall and a stream on the via ferrata, so the lower (most difficult) section can be a bit wet and muddy.
